Writer: The Rose YardeThe Rose Yarde

Parenting is no small feat, especially when you’re a mom of six!

Juggling work, cooking, childcare, and the not-so-glamorous role of being both mom and dad can lead to serious burnout. But what if I told you that the secret to staying sane lies in mastering the art of delegation... at home?

Yes, you read that right! I’ve discovered how to prevent burnout by getting my kids to clean up the very mess they create. And no, it’s not child labor—it’s life skills in action. Ready to learn how to turn chaos into order while teaching your children responsibility? Keep reading!

Why Cleaning Is a Life Skill, Not a Punishment

In our house, cleaning isn’t about punishment; it’s about teaching accountability, responsibility, and teamwork. When you have six kids, mess is inevitable. But I refuse to be the live-in maid. So, I decided to make cleaning part of our routine.

My strategy? "They make the mess, they clean it." It keeps the house in order, teaches them valuable skills, and most importantly, prevents me from burning out.

When to Increase Cleaning Assignments

Let’s be honest: kids always have requests. Whether it’s the latest gadget, entertainment budget, or V-Bucks for Fortnite, there’s always something on their wish list. Here’s my secret—when they want something extra, they earn it by pitching in around the house. Here are the top scenarios that trigger extra chores in our home:

  1. 📱 Anytime They Want Something Extra

    • Need a new charging cord? Clean the living room first.

  2. 💸 Luxury Entertainment Requests

    • If it’s not a basic necessity, it’s going to cost them some elbow grease.

  3. 📚 Teacher Sends Home a ‘Room for Improvement’ Notice

    • If they need to work harder in school, they can start by working harder at home.

  4. 🍏 Special Food Requests

    • When they ask for a whole box of Chinese New Year pears/apples from @HEB, extra chores come with it.

  5. 💅 Expensive Beauty Treatments

    • $100 nails? You better believe those baseboards will be spotless first.

  6. 🎮 Roblox Bucks and V-Bucks Requests

    • If they want to level up in the game, they first need to level up their cleaning skills.

  7. When They Ask for Gas Money... and They Have a Job

    • Yep, if they’re working and still asking for gas money, they’re working at home too.

  8. 🚪 When They Forget to Knock Before Entering My Bedroom... Twice in a Row

    • Respecting boundaries is non-negotiable. If they forget, extra chores serve as a good reminder.

  9. 🧹 Whenever I Feel the House Isn’t Clean Enough

    • Let’s be real—Mom’s satisfaction is the gold standard.

The Results? A Clean House and a Sane Mom

Since implementing this system, my house stays cleaner, my kids are more responsible, and my sanity is intact. They’ve learned that nothing in life is free, and I’ve learned that delegation is the key to preventing burnout.

This routine teaches them responsibility, accountability, and teamwork—all valuable life skills. Plus, it ensures that I get a break too.

Why This Works for Burnout Prevention

As moms, we often take on too much, thinking we have to do it all. But burnout is real, and self-care isn’t just about spa days or meditation. Sometimes, it’s about taking things off your plate. Teaching my kids to be accountable for their messes allows me to reclaim my time and mental energy.

Final Thoughts: Turning Chaos Into Order

Motherhood is hard work, but it doesn’t have to be exhausting. By involving my kids in maintaining our home, I’ve turned chaos into order and burnout into balance. It’s about strategy, routine, and yes—a little bit of tough love.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that it’s okay to ask for help—even from your own children. It’s not just about getting a clean house; it’s about teaching life skills, responsibility, and respect.
